Before the state mines were opened in the Limburg mining region, Geleen was a small town with only 4,000 inhabitants. Even after the closure of the mines, it is now a large village with over 33,000 inhabitants. Although situated near larger places as Sittard and Maastricht located, it has many amenities for people in the area. For example, there is a fine shopping street, a cycling track and no less than two casinos.
